Breeding with Endangered and Scarce Species
In the interest of wildlife in general, we decided to embark on a breeding program, specifically focused on endangered and scarce species.
We started by obtaining a Sable Antelope breeding family. The animals arrived on our farm on 5 October 2002, after extensive planning and preparation activities. These beautiful and proud animals have settled well and their progress is being monitored on a daily basis. A scientific breeding program has proved to be a great success and two new additions have resulted in the following years.
Next we acquired a Buffalo breeding family, which arrived on the farm on 4 December 2002. After months of negotiations, numerous registrations and obtainment of all the mandatory permits, the animals were declared fit and disease free and delivered.
Initially problems were encountered when the animals were released from the boma. The lucerne based feeds were however replaced with natural fodder and they soon returned to their normal healthy state. They have now settled and progress is monitored on a daily basis.
An addition to the buffalo family was recently added when the cow gave birth to a calf in March 2009.
In the next phase of the breeding program two Rhino were purchased during March 2004. Both the bull and the cow, although from different farms, settled nicely in their new habitat and adds an exhilirating big five experience to your visit at Naauwkloof.
Further progress and information will be made available on our web page regularly.
Any information or contribution to help us with our breeding program will be appreciated.
